Customized comfort for the evolving workplace

Ergonomics is the science of adapting the client’s work station according to anatomic, physiologic and mechanical principles in order to increase security and comfort in the client’s environment.

By adjusting your environment and personal habits, you can reduce fatigue, drawbacks, and risk of tension that, according to certain scientists, could cause injuries.

Almost as Adjustable as You Are

For all its wonders, the human body was not designed to be seated for long periods of time. This means that proper seating support is critical for muscle performance, healthy circulation, and spinal alignment. An advanced ergonomic chair can be a key element in the health and productivity of everyone in your in your organization.

Ergonomists and health care practitioners know that ergonomically-designed chairs significantly reduce the stresses associated with seated posture. CORCAN chairs meet today’s most advanced ergonomic requirements.

Seats, backs, arms, bases, and cylinders are all adjustable and interchangeable—making it easy and cost-effective to quickly reconfigure any CORCAN chair to suit an individual’s needs.

Chair Checklist: How to recognize top

  • Caster material should align with floor surface: nylon for carpet, urethane for hard surfaces, etc.
  • Base should be the correct size and type: larger chairs require larger bases for stability
  • Task chairs should have pneumatic seat-height adjustment for comfort and support as well as shock absorption and swivelling range of motion
  • Seat pan should tilt forward and back, lock into any position, and have a tilt tension control if the seat has a free-float mode
  • Proper seat size will allow user to sit against the backrest with approximately three-finger-widths of clearance between the back of the knees and front edge of the seat
  • Seat should have a waterfall (downward curve) front edge to reduce pressure on veins and should gently curve up at the sides to distribute weight for greater comfort
  • Seat should not dip inward in the centre (this adds pressure on legs) and should not rise up in the back middle portion (this adds pressure at the base of the spine)
  • Seat pan depth should be adjustable
  • Backrest must have a firm lumbar support and lateral curves to support the upper body and reduce the energy required to maintain upright posture
  • Backrest should be adjustable, covered with foam, and not have hard edges that can cause discomfort
  • Angle between the seat pan and back support should be greater than 90 degrees to help reduce stress on the spine.
  • The lumbar support should adjust up and down to accommodate users of different heights and weights
  • Adjustable arms should allow the user to pull the chair close to their work surface, should support the weight of the user’s arms, and offer guidance and support when getting in and out of the chair
  • Arms should adjust up and down and laterally for better comfort and support

Workstation Ergonomics

Keys to proper alignment and healthier performance

Correct Seat Height—Adjust seat height so that thighs are horizontal to the floor or sloping downward slightly. Angle of knees should be 90o to 100o with feet resting flat on the floor or on a foot rest.

Varying Seat Angle—Vary your seat angle slightly (forward and backward) during the workday to subtly change posture, ensure optimal blood flow, and minimize loading on your spine and trunk muscles.

Optimal Seat Depth—The depth of your seat should leave an approximate 3-finger width of clearance between back of knees and the front of seat.

Correct Back Rest Height—Your back rest should be positioned to support the inward curving lumbar spine that is located about two inches above the waist. This will maintain the natural ‘s’ curve of your spine.

Optimal Back Rest Angle—The back rest should be locked at an angle greater than 90o and your back should be in contact with the back rest at all times. This contact also allows the back rest lateral curve to reduce muscle activity required to keep you upright.

Balanced Tilt Tension—Tilt tension level should allow your chair to move freely as you do when in free float mode. (Note that gentle rocking when seated improves blood circulation.)

Correct Arm Rest Height—Arm rests should be adjusted to lightly support your forearms and reduce muscle activity in your neck and shoulders. Arm rests should
not impede access to your work surface and should help you safely get in and out of your chair.

Keyboard and Mouse Position—The keyboard should be positioned 2-to-3 cm below your elbow level when seated. The keyboard should lie flat or have a slight negative angle to so that wrists remain in a neutral position. The mouse should be placed within easy reach without strain.

Optimal Monitor Height—The monitor should be centred with your body and positioned so that the top of the screen is at eye level. Users who view the monitor through the bottom portion of bifocal lenses should lower their monitors accordingly.

Correct Monitor Distance—The monitor should be positioned approximately one arm’s length from your eyes.

Placement of Documents—Place documents on your work surface between the keyboard and the monitor or on either side of the monitor (at a 35o angle) in an upright document holder.

Item Organization—Keep the items that you use most often within easiest reach. Items used less often should still be easily accessible.
