Privacy Notice

The Government of Canada and the Correctional Service of Canada are committed to providing visitors with Web sites that respect their privacy. This Privacy Notice summarizes the privacy policy and practices on the Correctional Service of Canada Web site.

  • Correctional Service of Canada Web site does not automatically gather any specific personal information from you, such as your name, phone number or e-mail address. We would only obtain this type of information if you supply it by sending us an e-mail.
  • All personal information created, held or collected by the Correctional Service of Canada is protected under the federal Privacy Act . This means that at any point of collection you will be asked for consent to collect your information, or advised of the authority for such collection. You will be informed of the purpose for which it is being collected and how to exercise your right of access to that information.
  • The Correctional Service of Canada employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. This software receives and records the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that has contacted our Web site, the date and time of the visit and the pages visited. We make no attempt to link these addresses with the identity of individuals visiting our site unless an attempt to damage the site has been detected.
  • A "cookie" is a computer (text) file that is sent to a visitor's Web browser, by a Web server, in order to remember certain pieces of information. "Per-session cookies" are used on some portions of the Correctional Service of Canada's Web site to store information within a session. During your visit to our site your browser exchanges information with our Web server. Per-session cookies facilitate this exchange by reminding the server which computer is making the request. Learn more about persistent and per-session cookies.
  • The Correctional Service of Canada employs a fully automated Anti-Spam Filter to protect its employees and networks from spam. Incoming email messages that are flagged by the software as spam are deleted automatically by the technology without notification. The program is set to block email that is considered obvious spam because of its content (for example, pornographic, racist, get-rich-quick schemes, junk commercial solicitations) as determined by general industry best practice.
  • Information on individual visitors is used by Correctional Service of Canada employees, to respond to your request or to ensure the security of this system. We will only share information you give to us with another government department, if your inquiry relates to that department. We do not use the information to create individual profiles, nor do we disclose this information to anyone outside the federal government.

Google Analytics

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses Google Analytics, a Web analytics service provided by Google Inc. to help measure traffic patterns to, from, and within its public websites. This analytics measurement tool uses "session" and "persistent" cookies (persistent cookies are stored on your computer and expire two years after your last visit to the websites) to collect standard Internet log information and to track visitor behaviour information in an anonymous form. The information generated by the cookies about your use of the website (including your truncated IP address) will be transmitted to Google. No personally identifying information is recorded or provided to Google. This anonymous information is then used to evaluate visitors' use of the website and to compile statistical reports on website activity for CSC. The aggregate data and statistical reports are only used to help us make our site more useful to visitors and are only made available to Web managers and other designated staff who require this information to perform their duties.

We DO NOT include this Google Analytics measurement tool on any secure sites.

For further information, consult Google Analytics and its privacy policy.

If you wish, you may opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics by disabling or refusing the cookies, by disabling JavaScript within your browser or by using the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On. Disabling Google Analytics or JavaScript will still permit you to access comparable information or services from our websites. However, if you change the settings on your browser so that cookies will be denied or so that you will be warned before a cookie is saved on your computer, moving around on the websites may be a much slower process. To disable cookies or JavaScript, please refer to your vendor's browser instruction guide.

However, users should be aware that some information from external sources is available as a courtesy and will only be available in the language in which it was provided. Some hyperlinks direct users to sites of organizations or other entities that are not subject to the Official Languages Act .

Information Archived on the Web

Information identified as archived on the Web is for reference, research or recordkeeping purposes. It has not been altered or updated after the date of archiving. Web pages that are archived on the Web are not subject to the Government of Canada Web Standards. As per the Communications Policy of the Government of Canada, you can request alternate formats on the "Contact Us" page.

Persistent and per-session cookies

As described in the Privacy Notice, the Correctional Service of Canada uses per-session cookies on some sections of the Web site. Persistent cookies are not used.

Per-session cookies are stored in memory and are only available during an active session, in other words, while you are on the Web site. Per-session cookies do not permanently record data and are not stored on your computer's hard drive. Per-session cookies do not give the Web site access to anything else on your system, including any private information about you. Only the Web site that placed the cookie can retrieve it. Unlike persistent cookies, which are stored on your hard drive for a length of time set by the Web site, per-session cookies are cached (stored in memory) while you are visiting the Web site and are deleted from your cache when you leave the Web site. If we did not use per-session cookies, moving around on the Web site would be a much slower process.

You can set your browser to detect and reject cookies.

If you use Internet Explorer:

  • Choose the Tools menu entry, then Internet Options.
  • Select the Security tab, then click the zone you'd like to change, followed by the Custom button.
  • Scroll down to the header titled Cookies, and choose how you'd like to handle cookies. You can choose to accept cookies from all sites, refuse to accept any, or be prompted whenever a site wants to send you a cookie.

If you are using Netscape Navigator 3.x, you can choose whether or not to accept a cookie by:

  • Going to Options, choose Network Preferences then select Protocols.
  • Select "Show an alert before accepting a cookie".

In Navigator versions 4 and 6, under Edit, you can refuse cookies entirely by setting an option in the Advanced section of the Preferences.
