Narrator: Those who are sentenced to serve less than two years are placed in jails or prisons managed by the provinces and territories. Those who are sentenced to serve from two years to life, are sent to federal correctional institutions that are under the responsibility of the Correctional Service of Canada, an agency within the Ministry of the Solicitor General of Canada. The reality of imprisonment, regardless of who has jurisdiction, is the loss of freedom. For most of us it's hard to imagine what that deprivation of freedom would really be like; the freedom to move about, the freedom to make decisions, and do the kinds of things we want to do. These are basic liberties we tend to take for granted.
