About the Institution

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security facility located in Stony Mountain, Manitoba. It shares a property with Rockwood Institution. The institution is based on a dome design model where offender accommodations are direct observation living units.

The population is divided among five operational units offering various levels of supervision, including a healing unit for Aboriginal inmates (Ni-Miikana).

Stony Mountain Institution promotes a healing process based on Aboriginal culture for the successful reintegration of Aboriginal offenders.

As part of CSC's efforts to encourage inmates to become law-abiding citizens, CSC offers various national correctional programs.

Work is now underway to increase capacity at the Institution. Construction of one new 96-bed living unit is expected to be complete in 2013-2014. Delivery of correctional and rehabilitation programs is also being expanded.
