Inmate Assault at Atlantic Institution

Renous, New Brunswick, July 5, 2012 - At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, an inmate was assaulted at Atlantic Institution, a maximum-security federal penitentiary.  The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and taken to an outside hospital.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Institution are investigating the incident.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
