Death of Inmate at La Macaza Institution

La Macaza, Quebec, January 11, 2012 – On January 10, 2012, inmate Daniel Bruneau from La Macaza Institution, a medium security institution located in La Macaza, was found unresponsive in his cell. Correctional officers immediately performed CPR and an ambulance was called.

The inmate was taken to the Centre de santé et de services sociaux d'Antoine-Labelle, where he was pronounced dead at 7:00 p.m.

At the time of his death, Mr. Bruneau, 51 years old, was serving an indeterminate sentence for manslaughter, sexual assaults and forcible confinement. His sentence had commenced on August 6, 2009.

Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
