Death of an Inmate from Cowanville Institution
Cowansville, Quebec, January 16, 2012 – On January 14, 2012, Mr. Raymond Baird, an inmate from Cowansville Institution died of apparent natural causes. After the offender experienced discomfort, staff performed CPR until the paramedics arrived at the institution. The inmate was taken to the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At the time of his death, Mr. Baird, 57, was serving an indeterminate sentence for second degree murder, attempted murder and assault causing bodily harm. His sentence had commenced on February 8, 1991.
Next of kin have been notified.
As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
