Lockdown at Fenbrook Institution

Gravenhurst, Ontario, September 21, 2012At approximately 11:00 a.m on September 21, 2012, Fenbrook Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary, was placed on lockdown in order for staff to facilitate a search of the facility.

The search was ordered by the Acting Warden, following the seizure of contraband and receipt of information that there may be more contraband within the institution.

The safety and security of our institutions is the primary consideration of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). Fenbrook Institution will re-open as soon as it is determined safe to do so.

Regularly scheduled visits have been suspended. Those who have previously scheduled visits are asked to contact the institution directly.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future safety concerns, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances and take action where necessary.
