Death of Inmate at Joyceville Institution
Kingston, Ontario, February 11, 2013 – On February 10, 2013, inmate Stewart Poirier from Joyceville Institution died of natural causes following an extended illness at Kingston Penitentiary Regional Hospital.
At the time of his death, Mr. Poirier, 53, was serving a nine-year, seven-month sentence for arson, mischief causing danger to life, attempted murder and threaten death. His sentence had commenced on December 14, 2012.
Next of kin have been notified.
As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
