Death of Inmate at Kingston Penitentiary

Kingston, Ontario, February 12, 2013 – On February 12, 2013, inmate Michael Garniss from Kingston Penitentiary died of natural causes following a lengthy illness at Kingston Penitentiary  Regional Hospital.

At the time of his death, Mr. Garniss, 51, was serving an indeterminate sentence for first degree murder. His sentence commenced on November 24, 2011. 

Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
