Death of an Inmate at Mission Institution

Mission, British Columbia, August 17, 2012 – On August 14, 2012, inmate Darcy Bertrand from Mission Institution was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff immediately performed CPR and an ambulance was called. 

The offender was taken to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and was pronounced deceased on August 16, 2012.

At the time of his death, Mr. Bertrand, 46, was serving an indeterminate sentence for three counts of second degree murder. His sentence commenced on June 21, 1996. 

Next-of-kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
