FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa - November 12, 2010 - In response to tonight's edition of the fifth estate, the Commissioner of Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), Don Head, issued the following statement:
"First and foremost, I want to reiterate to Ashley's parents, her family and friends, our sincerest condolences for her tragic death in these unfortunate circumstances.
"The program tonight was obviously very disturbing and the circumstances of the apparent staff response troubling.
"I want to assure you that this is not a reflection of the highly professional and capable members of the Correctional Service of Canada who are committed to following the rule of law. Our staff serves to protect both Canadians and the offenders incarcerated in our correctional institutions.
"Following Ashley's death, CSC called a number of investigations, which revealed that the actions taken by certain managers in response to the incident were unacceptable.
"There have been several investigations into Ashley's death and CSC has taken action in response to their findings and recommendations. For example, we have increased our efforts to hire health care professionals, train our frontline staff, and provide services needed by offenders with mental health disorders.
"The Correctional Service of Canada will continue to cooperate fully with the Ontario Coroner's office with respect to the official inquiry into Ashley's death."
