FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
REFUSING TO LOCK-UP AT ATLANTIC INSTITUTION
RENOUS, NB, March 29, 2004 - On Monday March 29, 2004, at 13:00 hrs, 17 inmates in Unit 2, D-Range and five inmates in Unit 2, C-Range refused to lock-up. At 14:00 hrs, the five inmates on C-Range voluntarily returned to their cells. At 16:30 hrs, two inmates on D-Range also returned to their cells voluntarily. CSC staff and the remaining groups of inmates continued to negotiate in order to resolve the situation.
As negotiations were unsuccessful, the Institutional Emergency Response Team was deployed to bring the situation to an end. All inmates returned to their cells at 19:00 hrs. No act of violence or damages has been reported. The institution is planning to return to normal activities tomorrow for all the inmates that were not involved in the incident.
Atlantic is a maximum security institution located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick.
