MONCTON, NB, April 8, 2004 - On 29 March 2004, Marena McLaughlin took over as the Regional Deputy Commissioner for the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) in the Atlantic Region. She succeeded Remi Gobeil who has accepted new responsibilities with the Correctional Service of Canada. Among his new duties, he will provide executive leadership to the security portfolio on a national level.
Marena McLaughlin, originally from the Acadian Peninsula, is a graduate of the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick, and began her public service career as a language teacher with the Public Service Commission in 1975. She subsequently filled various human resources positions with various government departments culminating in the position of Regional Manager, Human Resources, with CSC from 1990 to 1997.
From 1997 to 2000, Ms. McLaughlin served as the Warden of Westmorland Institution before becoming Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Corporate Services. She accepted an assignment, in September 2001, with Public Works and Government Services Canada as the Director, Superannuation, in which capacity she led a national service agency administering the pension plans of half a million active and retired public servants.
In March 2003, she accepted the position of Assistant Commissioner, Human Resource Management, at CSC National Headquarters. In this capacity, Ms. McLaughlin has championed a number of human resource issues including: Public Service Modernisation and rebuilding the classification and staffing systems within CSC.
In her role as the Regional Deputy Commissioner - Atlantic, she is responsible for the overall operation of the Correctional Service of Canada in the Atlantic Region.
