FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT ATLANTIC INSTITUTION

RENOUS, NB, February 9, 2005 - During the afternoon of Wednesday, February 9, 2005, an inmate was stabbed at the Atlantic Institution.

At approximately 15:25, the inmate was stabbed numerous times, in Unit 2, and was transported to the Miramichi Regional Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

The inmate was assaulted by two other inmates from Unit 2. The two inmates have been identified and have been segregated.

The weapon used in the incident has not been identified at this time, however, a search of Unit 2 is being conducted.

Unit 2 which consist of 71 inmates is locked down while Units 1 and 3 have normal routine.

The RCMP is on the scene to conduct its investigation. Correctional Service Canada will review all circumstances surrounding this incident.

The Atlantic Institution is a maximum security institution with a population of 200 inmates.
