FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RENOUS, N.B., July 22, 2005 - At approximately 20:15, Thursday, July 21, 2005, an inmate was found hanging in his cell at Atlantic Institution. He was pronounced dead at 20:56 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital.

The inmate has been identified as Kirk Rivet, serving a sentence of 17 years, 2 months, since April 2001.

Institutional healthcare staff was on the range at the time the incident was reported. The RCMP was also contacted. An autopsy is being performed today. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances of this incident.

Atlantic institution is a maximum-security penitentiary located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick.
