FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPRINGHILL, NS, August 3, 2005 - At 8 a.m. this morning an inmate was assaulted by other inmates at Springhill Institution.

The inmate received non-life threatening wounds and was able to walk to the institution's principal entrance where he was assessed by staff and then taken to All Saints Hospital in Springhill by correctional officers.

The institution was immediately secured and an exceptional search for weapons is underway.

The Correctional Service of Canada and the local police are investigating the incident.

Springhill is a medium-security institution in Springhill, Nova Scotia.
