FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RENOUS, NB, November 2, 2005 - Since September 1, an inmate at Atlantic Institution, trained in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, has been giving tattoos as part of the Safer Tattooing Pilot Project.
This pilot initiative is a component of CSC's partnership in the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada.
The project aims to promote health and wellness while maintaining security. By educating inmates about the risks of infection and by providing them with an opportunity to reduce the likelihood of infection and transmission, we are maintaining the health of the community and institutions.
The pilot project provides inmates with access to tattooing, in strictly controlled environments, thereby enhancing the safety of our staff and our institutions.
CSC will continue to encourage inmates to use safer tattooing practices in order to eliminate the use of illicit needles in the institutions that jeopardize the health and safety of Canadians, staff and inmates.
Media representatives wishing to profile this initiative are invited to the Atlantic Institution on Thursday, November 10, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Since a security clearance is needed for everyone entering a CSC institution, media representatives should forward their name, date of birth and place of birth, no later than 12:00, Tuesday, November 8, 2005, to the attention of Michael MacLeod (506) 623-4052.
