FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPRINGHILL, NS, November 23, 2005 - At approximately 20:20 hours on Tuesday, November 22, 2005, an inmate reported to the institutional Health Care Staff that he had been stabbed. During a subsequent formal security count, Correctional Officers discovered a second inmate who had been injured. Both inmates were transported to outside hospital for medical attention and are expected to make full recoveries.

Immediately following the first reported incident, the institution was locked down. A search for weapons will be conducted. The local police are presently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, presently housing 394 male inmates.
