SPRINGHILL, NS, May 25, 2006 - In the morning of Thursday, May 25, 2006, at approximately 10:05 am, an inmate was stabbed while in the Courtyard area of the institution. The resulting injuries were not considered life threatening however the victim was transported to outside hospital for examination. The inmate has since been returned to the institution.
The weapon has been recovered. The local Police have been notified and will be conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances involved in the incident.
All inmates were confined to their cells immediately following the incident in order to secure the area where the assault occurred and to facilitate a search of the units to ascertain whether there were any further issues of security and safety for staff or inmates.
The Institutional routine will be returned to normal as quickly as possible.
Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 423 male offenders.
