SPRINGHILL, (Nova Scotia), September 22, 2006 - Springhill Institution has returned to normal operations as of 7:00 a.m., Friday, September 22, 2006. The Institution had been locked down since Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, following an incident where an inmate was assaulted. The resulting injuries were not considered serious; however the victim was transported to outside hospital for examination. The inmate was shortly thereafter returned to the Institution.
All inmates were confined to their cells immediately following the incident in order to conduct interviews and facilitate a search of the facility to ascertain whether there were any further issues of security and safety for staff or inmates. Institutional Management has reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident and has now determined that operations can resume normal routine.
Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary located in Springhill, Nova Scotia, housing 444 male offenders.
