RENOUS, NB,November 22, 2006 - At approximately 16:00 hrs on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, sixty inmates from Unit 1 and nine inmates from Unit 4 at Atlantic Institution refused to lock up in their cells.
As a result, the Institutional Crisis Center was opened at 16:00 hrs and negotiations ensued.
Unit 4 inmates voluntarily returned to their cells at approximately 16:42 hrs.
Unit 1 inmates voluntarily returned to their cells at approximately 20:25 hrs.
Sixty inmates from Unit 1 and nine inmates from Unit 2 are currently on lockdown status. The remaining inmates in the institution who were not involved have returned to normal routine.
The Correctional Service of Canada will examine circumstances surrounding the incident.
Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security institution housing 220 inmates located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick.
