FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RENOUS, NB, January 2, 2007 - At approximately 22:30 hrs on Sunday, December 31st 2006, fifty-nine inmates from Unit 1 and nine inmates from Unit 4 at Atlantic Institution refused to lock up in their cells.

The disturbance ended without injuries or damages at approximately 05:00, when inmates voluntarily returned to their cells. Fifty-nine inmates from Unit 1 are currently on lockdown status.

The remaining inmates have returned to normal routine.

The Correctional Service of Canada will examine circumstances surrounding the incident.

Atlantic is a maximum-security institution located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick.
