ESCAPE FROM WESTMORLAND INSTITUTION

DORCHESTER, NB, January 15, 2007 - One inmate at Westmorland Institution is suspected of escaping from the minimum-security facility late Sunday, January 14, 2007, and returning to the institution shortly thereafter.

After his return, the Sackville RCMP were called separately to investigate a break-in at a home in the nearby village of Dorchester. A police dog brought to the scene led the RCMP back to Westmorland Institution.

The escapee, along with two other inmates suspected of involvement in the same break and enter, have been transferred to Dorchester Penitentiary.

The Correctional Service of Canada is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Enhanced searching of Westmorland Institution is underway and inmate movement has been restricted pending the outcome of investigations being conducted by both CSC and the RCMP.
