FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RENOUS, NB, February 7, 2007 - On Wednesday, February 7th, 2007, at approximately 13:00, one inmate was assaulted at Atlantic Institution. He had to be transferred to outside hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries and returned to the institution at 16:42.

One inmate has been placed in segregation while the investigation is ongoing.

The safety and security of our institutions is of paramount importance to the Correctional Service of Canada. The RCMP along with the Correctional Service of Canada is investigating into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security institution located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick, which currently houses 222 inmates.
