FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPRINGHILL, NS, June 6, 2007 - Springhill Institution is in lockdown following an incident which occurred Wednesday, June 6, at approximately 9 a.m.

Two inmates barricaded themselves on a range in the segregation unit of the Springhill Medium Institution and started several small fires.

Another 12 inmates, also on the range, did not appear to take part in the incident.

An Emergency Response Team was deployed. The incident ended around noon. While there was some minor damage to cells there are no known injuries.

The Correctional Service is investigating the incident.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 447 male offenders.
