FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DISTURBANCE AT ATLANTIC INSTITUTION

RENOUS, NB, June 17, 2007 - At approximately 22:15 on the evening of Saturday June 16th 2007, fifty-six inmates from Unit 1 at Atlantic Institution refused to return to their cells.

During the course of the incident, inmates damaged several light fixtures, windows and other material on the ranges. A fire was also lit but was quickly extinguished by institutional staff.

Inmates returned voluntarily to their cells at approximately 07:00.

No staff members or inmates were injured, and public safety was not jeopardized at any point during this incident.

The safety and security of our institutions is of paramount importance to the Correctional Service of Canada. The RCMP along with the Correctional Service of Canada is investigating into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

All sixty-seven inmates in Unit 1 remain on a lockdown status while the remaining inmates will return to normal routine this afternoon.

Atlantic is a maximum-security institution located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick, which currently houses 213 inmates.
