FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

SPRINGHILL, NS, November 8, 2007 - At approximately 1540 hours on Wednesday, November 7, 2007, a correctional officer at Springhill Institution was physically assaulted by an offender. No weapon was believed to have been used in this assault. The officer was immediately transferred to hospital. The extent of the injuries are considered serious but not life threatening and it is expected there will be a full recovery.

The institution was immediately locked down. Springhill Police are conducting an investigation. The instigator believed to be involved in this assault, has been transferred to higher security. Charges are expected to be laid.

As with all major incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will be reviewing the circumstances surrounding this assault.

The Institutional routine will return to normal as soon as it is safe to do so.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 470 male offenders.
