FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RENOUS, NB, January 11, 2007 - On Thursday January 10th 2008, at approximately 18:15, an inmate was assaulted at Atlantic Institution. He has been transferred to outside hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Fifty seven inmates housed in Unit 1 were placed on lockdown status following the incident. Weapons were recovered and released to the RCMP.

The safety and security of our institutions is of paramount importance to the Correctional Service of Canada. The RCMP along with the Correctional Service of Canada is reviewing all circumstances surrounding the incident.

Atlantic is a maximum-security institution located in the village of Renous, New Brunswick, which currently houses 226 inmates.
