CONTRABAND AT SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

SPRINGHILL, NS, September 4, 2008 - On Tuesday, September 2, 2008, a large quantity of drugs was confiscated from a visitor who arrived at Springhill Institution to visit an offender.

The intercepted drugs included: 25 dilaudid 4 mg and 36 grams of marijuana. The total estimated institutional value of the drugs is approximately $5,000.

The Springhill Police Service and the North Cumberland Street Crime Unit are investigating the incident.

Preventing drugs from entering our institutions is an ongoing challenge. CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders, visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 458 male offenders.
