FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DRUG AND TOBACCO INTERCEPTION

Springhill, (Nova Scotia), February 6, 2009 - On Monday, January 26, 2009, a quantity of drugs and tobacco was confiscated at Springhill Institution. Correctional Service of Canada staff seized the contraband during a non-routine search of an inmate.

Also, on Wednesday February 4, 2009, the inmate was taken to hospital and had surgery to remove 20.8 grams of tobacco that was confined inside his body.

The intercepted drugs included: 38 grams of tobacco, 18.1 grams of marijuana, 5 Dilaudid #8 and 30 Alprazolam 0.5 grams.

The total estimated institutional value of the dugs and tobacco is approximately $3550.

The Springhill Police Service and the North Cumberland Street Crime Unit are investigating the incident.
