Springhill, (Nova Scotia), March 2, 2009– On Friday, February 27, 2009, a lockdown was initiated at Springhill Institution. Several live rounds of ammunition were found in the main parking lot outside the Institution’s perimeter fence.
While the rounds were found outside the fence, to ensure the safety and security of staff, inmates and the overall security of the institution, inmates have been secured to their calls and a complete institutional search is being conducted.
Visits and recreational programs have been cancelled and inmates are being fed in their cells. There are no reported incidents and the institution remains quiet.
The facility will reopen once institutional management determines it is safe to do so.
