FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH OF OFFENDER SABATTIS

Springhill, Nova Scotia  – An inmate died early Saturday morning, March 28, 2009 at Springhill Institution. An autopsy was completed and foul play has been ruled out. Further tests are pending.

He has been identified as Joseph Sabattis. Mr. Sabattis, who was 19 years old, was serving a 2 year 8 month sentence for assault, use of force, threats to destroy property and threats of death and harm. Sentence commenced January 22, 2009.

Next of kin has been notified.

As is the case whenever an offender dies while in custody, the police and coroner were notified.

The death may be the subject of a coroner's inquest as is common with any death of a person in custody.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 436 male offenders.
