INCIDENT - SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

On Saturday, May 9, 2009, an inmate was assaulted by another inmate at Springhill Institution. The injured inmate was immediately escorted to the nearest health care facility and has since returned to the Institution. The resulting injuries were not considered life threatening.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce further incidents, Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances surrounding this event and take action if necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 431 male offenders.
