LOCKDOWN - SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

May 29, 2009

Springhill Institution continues to operate in lockdown mode in order to complete the search for an unauthorized object.

An additional level of searching by correctional officers is taking place today.

The lockdown was initiated on Tuesday after an anonymous handwritten note was received indicating that an unauthorized object could be on the premises.

Visits and programs have since been cancelled until further notice.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 421 male offenders.
