FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INCIDENT - SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

At approximately 0845 hours on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, an inmate was assaulted by other inmates at Springhill Institution. The inmate was stabilized and taken to outside hospital. The resulting injuries are considered serious. Two inmates have been identified as aggressors and have been secured in Segregation.

Following the incident staff immediately secured the area where the assault occurred. Police are currently conducting an investigation.

Visits and programs have been cancelled. The Institutional routine will be returned to normal when management feels it is safe to do so.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 431 male offenders.
