Springhill, Nova Scotia - On Monday, June 15, 2009, a large quantity of contraband was confiscated at Springhill Institution. Correctional Service Canada staff seized the contraband during a search of an inmate’s cell.
The intercepted contraband included: Dilaudid #8 pills with a total estimated institutional value of $4,000.
The Springhill Police Service and the North Cumberland Street Crime Unit are investigating the incident.
Preventing contraband from entering our institutions is an ongoing challenge. CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders, visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.
Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 429 male offenders.
