DRUG AND CONTRABAND INTERCEPTION

July 9, 2009 - Dorchester, New Brunswick - On Friday, July 3, 2009, large quantities of drugs and tobacco products were discovered attached to the frame of an industrial vehicle parked outside of the institution.

The seizure is the result of intelligence information that had been provided to institutional security intelligence staff.

Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) seized 10 bails of tobacco, 7 packages of tobacco papers, 20 (40 mg) dilaudid pills and approximately 34 grams of marijuana.

The estimated institutional value of these items is approximately $8,500.

CSC has a zero tolerance policy on illegal drugs in its institutions and has a number of tools available that are consistently used in its efforts to control the flow of drugs into institutions. These tools include searches of offenders, visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

Dorchester Penitentiary is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 450 male offenders.
