Dorchester, NB, October 31, 2009 – Westmorland Institution is currently operating on a modified routine as a result of a H1N1 flu virus positive case and some suspected cases.
Following consultation with public health authorities, all appropriate steps have been taken to contain the situation, including infection prevention and control measures in an effort to limit the transmission of the disease. Immunization of inmates identified as priority groups by the Public Health Agency Canada at Westmorland Institution was completed on October 29.
The facility will return to a normal routine once health authorities determine that it is safe to do so. Regularly scheduled visits are cancelled.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system. Westmorland Institution is a minimum-security federal institution situated in Dorchester, New Brunswick. It houses 250 male offenders.
Dorchester Penitentiary is a medium-security federal penitentiary, housing 450 male offenders.
