RENOUS, N.B., February 17, 2010 - At approximately 0900 hrs, on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Atlantic Institution was placed under lockdown as a result of a peaceful demonstration by a group of inmates.
The incident began when a group of inmates refused to return to their cells. No damages or injuries to staff or inmates were reported. The inmates have now returned to their cells.
The institution will return to its normal routine as soon as management determines it is safe to do so.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of Correctional Service Canada.
Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security institution located in the Village of Renous, New Brunswick, and currently houses 227 inmates.
