FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT ATLANTIC INSTITUTION

Renous, N.B., February 26, 2010 – On Thursday, February 25, 2010 at approximately 21:10 hrs, an inmate was assaulted at Atlantic Institution.

The unit where the assault occurred was immediately shut down with the rest of the institution commencing evening normal lockdown later on.

The assaulted inmate was escorted to the nearest health care facility with non-life threatening injuries. He remained overnight and has since been returned to the Institution.

The incident is being investigated by the RCMP and Correctional Service Canada. No suspect in the assault has yet been identified.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security institution located in the Village of Renous, New Brunswick.
