FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION UNDER LOCKDOWN

Springhill, Nova Scotia; July 13, 2010 – At approximately 14:00 hours, on Monday, July 12, 2010, Springhill Institution was put under lockdown to allow a search for contraband and unauthorized items.

Searching of the institution is ongoing and normal institution operations including visits are suspended until the conclusion of the search. The lockdown will remain in effect until the search is completed.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary situated in the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia. It currently houses 396 male offenders.
