FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INVOLVING SHERIFF VEHICLE TRANSPORTING FEDERAL INMATES

Renous, NB, September 16, 2010 - At approximately 12:00 noon, on Thursday, September 16, 2010, a Sheriff vehicle transporting two federal inmates was involved in a traffic accident outside of Miramichi, New Brunswick.

At the time of the accident, the two inmates were being transported from a provincial facility in Nova Scotia to a federal institution in New Brunswick.

Following the accident, the inmates were kept under custody by the members of the Sheriff Department until being secured by federal institution staff.

The inmates as well as the members from the Sheriff Department did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. They were taken to the nearest health-care facility for assessment and treatment.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
