Springhill, Nova Scotia, March 29, 2011 A lockdown is currently in effect at Springhill Institution. At approximately 1820 hours, on Monday, March 28, 2011, an inmate was assaulted. The lockdown has been initiated to facilitate an investigation and ensure safety.
Following the assault, the injured inmate was stabilized and treated by health staff at the Institution. His condition is currently rated as good and he has been returned to his cell.
Staff immediately secured the area, and the Springhill Police Service was called in to investigate. The investigation by the Springhill Police Service and CSC personnel is ongoing.
Visits and programs have been suspended at the Institution. Institutional routine will return to normal once the investigation is completed and management feels it is safe to do so.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary housing 392 male offenders.
