CONTRABAND INTERCEPTED AT SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

Springhill, NS, April 15, 2011 –On Monday, April 11, 2011, a significant quantity of contraband was confiscated at Springhill Institution. Correctional Service Canada staff intercepted the contraband from an offender who was attempting to introduce it in the institution.

The intercepted contraband included 6.3 grams of cocaine. The contraband has a total institutional value of approximately $6,300.

The Springhill Police Department is investigating the incident.

Preventing contraband from entering our institutions is an ongoing challenge. CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders, visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

This most recent interception of contraband is a clear indication of the efficiency of these methods.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary situated in Springhill, Nova Scotia. It houses 397 male offenders.
