CONTRABAND INTERCEPTED AT SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION

Springhill, NS, June 24, 2011 – A significant quantity of contraband was confiscated at Springhill Institution. Correctional Service Canada staff intercepted the contraband from two different offenders attempting to introduce it into the institution.

The intercepted contraband included a total of 28.9 grams of hashish and marijuana and a total of 21.5 grams of tobacco. The contraband has a total institutional value of approximately $3,100.

The Springhill Police Department is investigating the incident and outside charges are pending.

Preventing contraband from entering our institutions is an ongoing challenge. CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders, visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary situated in Springhill, Nova Scotia. It houses 403 male offenders.
