Springhill, Nova Scotia, October 17, 2011 – On October 15, 2011, inmate Michael Merlin from Springhill Institution died of apparent natural causes in a hospital in Amherst, Nova Scotia.
At the time of his death, Michael Merlin, 41, was serving a 3-year sentence for robbery and failure to comply with the conditions of an undertaking. His sentenced had commenced on September 8, 2011.
Next of kin have been notified.
As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Springhill Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary situated in Springhill, Nova Scotia. It currently houses 364 male offenders.
