FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE FROM PITTSBURGH INSTITUTION

KINGSTON, ON, March 2, 2004 - Steven Stevenson, a 41-year-old federal offender, escaped custody at approximately 7 p.m. Monday, March 1st, 2004 while on a compassionate escorted temporary absence attending a funeral in the Toronto area. Police were immediately informed. The offender is a resident of Pittsburgh Institution, a minimum security institution in the Kingston area.

Stevenson is serving a sentence of 4 years 6 month sentence for robbery and fraud. The sentence commenced on February 28th, 2002, and his warrant expiry date is the 27th of August 2006, with a statutory release date of February 26, 2005.

Mr. Stevenson weighs approximately 108 kg (239 lbs), and is 180cm (5ft 11in) tall with brown eyes, thinning black hair and a medium complexion. Mr. Stevenson has tattoos on both shoulders.

Correctional Service of Canada is collaborating closely with the police and will conduct its own investigation into the incident.
