FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KITCHENER, ON, October 1, 2004 - The construction of the Secure Unit at Grand Valley Institution has been finalized. The institution will begin receiving women offenders into this unit as of this date.

The opening of this unit, which is part of the implementation of the Intensive Intervention Strategy, is a step toward attaining the objectives of the Mission of the Correctional Service of Canada. This Secure Unit was specifically designed to respond to the high needs and risks presented by this small group of women offenders through intensive interventions, supervision and treatment in a secure environment.

The institution is planning an open house for our community partners and the media at a future date.
