FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KINGSTON, ON, January 2, 2005 - At approximately 1800 hours on January 1, 2005, an inmate at Joyceville Institution was stabbed in the abdomen. The inmate was immediately transported by ambulance to Kingston General Hospital for emergency treatment where he died as a result of the injuries. The incident occurred in the recreation corridor during movement for evening recreation. The deceased inmate's name is being withheld at the request of the next of kin.

The Institution is locked down to facilitate a search for weapons and contraband.

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad were immediately contacted and are currently investigating. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The Institution will be closed for visits and other activities until further notice.
